Fall of President Aristide
European Parliament Press release - 8 March 2003
Charles TANNOCK (EPP-ED, London) spoke of the fall from power of Jean-Bertrand Aristide in Haiti. He remarked that he was the sixth democratically elected leader from Central and South America to be ousted in recent years, and that it would be wrong to take for granted the progress that had been made there in embedding democracies.
He also asked the President to send best wishes to the newly established pan-African parliament, part of the African Union. President Cox said this was a positive suggestion.
